Digital Stone Project
June 1, 2018 - July 2, 2018
I participated in the 2018 Digital Stone Project, completing the stone carving Cut: Digital File to Marble Form. This annual event, held at the Garfagnana Innovazione studios in Italy, brings together an international cohort of designers, architects, artists, and programmers.
The composition for Cut is an abstract digital collage of seven different mechanical cutting heads used in the CNC stone milling process. I created a digital model using preexisting 3D models of physical milling bits—the component of the robotic arm that makes contact with the stone. The collage composition aims to capture the elegance of repetitive motion in the milling process.
This project's production process used a combination of robotic manufacturing technologies and traditional hand-carving tools. A 7-axis robotic water-cooled mill was used to remove bulk marble material. After twenty-five hours of machine time, the basic shapes of the Cut design were in place, and the marble block was moved from the CNC mill to a traditional hand-carving station. I completed the finishing carving on the project using electric and pneumatic hand-carving tools.
Cut: Digital File to Marble Form was carved in Venato Orto di Donna Marble, stone from the Focolaccia Quarry. The project was exhibited at Carbo Nato di Calcio, Villa Bertelli, Forte dei Marmi, Italy.
