Background

My studio practice focuses on classical stone carving and contemporary digital media to explore how our physical and digital environments shape our perceptions. I pull loosely on ontological design theory, the circular loop of “what we design designs us,” as I explore how the systems and structures we engage with impact how we interpret the world around us. I am focusing on physical and digital environments not to establish a hierarchy of importance or value but to consider how each environment presents aspects of materiality, scale, and time. My sculptures explore the beauty and possibility inherent in digital design and meditate on humans' core connection to the solid materiality of our physical world.

I received my MFA from Utah State University and BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City. My work has been exhibited at the Colby College Museum of Art (Waterville, Maine), the Kennedy Museum of Art (Athens, Ohio), Villa Bertelli (Forte dei Marmi, Italy), the Majestic Gallery (Nelsonville, Ohio), Utah State University (Logan, Utah), the Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery (New York, New York) and others. I received a Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award in 2019-2020. My Fulbright-Nehru research project, Jali Screens of Northern India: Investigating a Sculptural Framework for Perception, was based in New Delhi and Rajasthan.

My primary teaching area is three-dimensional design, with secondary specializations in material studies and digital fabrication. My background in scenic design (including drafting, model building, and construction) informs my teaching practice. I have taught at Utah State University, Ohio University, Bowdoin College, and Colby College.
